JYDERUP FOLK HIGH SCHOOL

The Danish “folk high school” is a special kind of free-school, outside of the normal education system, that offers non-formal education for adults. Most students are between 18 and 30 years old and the length of a typical stay is 4-6 months. You sleep, eat, study and spend your spare time at the school. There are no academic requirements for admittance and there are no exams – but you will get a diploma as a proof of your attendance. (question: is it a diploma? also, is the school accredited?)

The main idea behind the folk high school is that you are at the school because you want to be, and not because you have to. It’s about your will and lust for learning and living together with other students and teachers. The teaching is characterised by professionalism and dedication. Classes are based on dialogue and mutual learning between teachers and students. The main focus is to discover and strengthen the unique skills of each student in a challenging yet supportive social atmosphere.

ABOUT JYDERUP HØJSKOLE

It is in an old castle located in the the beautiful nature of Nord-west Zealand (an island in Denmark), one hour by train from the capital Copenhagen. You live, eat, sleep and learn at the school, and share a room with a roommate. The school is an enviroment for creative people and we have lectures or concerts once a week about anything from free-jazz, history, traditional folk-music, politics to experimental electronic music and much more.

At Jyderup Højskole we provide 6 different main subjects that students can apply for: Songwriting, Folk-musik, Electronic Music, Environmental politics/Permaculture, Danish culture studies, and Art. Besides these subjects, we provides workshops and side-subjects such as Creative Writing, Guitar lessons, basic electronic music, “outdoor living”, art, piano lessons, singing lessons, Litterature, Film, band practice (“playing together”), graffiti, cultural entrepreneurship, art exhibition curation, and more.
