The Danish Folk High School is a special kind of free school, that offers a non-formal education for adults and is independent of the normal educational system. At Jyderup Folk High School most students are between 18 and 30 years old, and the length of a typical stay is 4-6 months. You sleep, eat, study and spend your spare time at the school. There are no academic requirements for admittance and there are no exams – but you will get a diploma as a proof of your attendance. Read more about the Danish Folk High School tradition.

On a Folk High School you attend because you want to, and not because you have to. It’s about your will and lust for learning and living together with other students and teachers. The teaching is characterized by professionalism and dedication. Classes are based on dialogue and mutual learning between teachers and students. The main focus is to discover and strengthen the unique skills of each student in a challenging yet supportive and social atmosphere.

The school is situated in an old castle located near the forest in the beautiful nature of north-west Zealand – the biggest island in Denmark, only one hour by train from the capital Copenhagen. You live, eat, sleep and learn at the school and you share a room with a roommate. We have a lake in the garden where you can go kayaking or just take at swim before you heat up in our sauna.

We offer six main courses that you can apply for: Music, Electronic Music, Environmental Politics/Permaculture, Danish Culture Studies, Weaving and Fine Arts. Besides these subjects, we provide workshops and side subjects such as creative writing, art, guitar lessons, basic electronic music, piano lessons, singing lessons, literature, film, band practice, graffiti, cultural entrepreneurship, art exhibition curation, outdoor living and more. Jyderup Højskole offers a creative environment, and we regularly arrange interdisciplinary projects and collaborations. Every morning we sing together at our morning assembly, and once a week we have lectures or concerts about various topics such as free jazz, history, traditional folk music, politics, experimental electronic music and much more.

The school does not involve any kind of tests or examination, but you will receive a document of attendance.
